Team Nifty's End of Year Reflections

Well, hasn’t 2017 flown by! And now that it, and our fourth year of servicing the Australian startup community, is coming to a close, we’ve done some reflection on the year that was. Scroll below to meet some of the Nifty team and read their 2017 reflections plus predictions for what 2018 has in store.

Megan Linton, Product Lead

What's your highlight of 2017?

Releasing the new look/new functioning Nifty site after we outgrew the last version. Part of that was adding new features like customised examples that our customers had been asking years for.

What are you most excited about in 2018?

We have a huge 2018 planned for Nifty - with new offerings, new features and we hope more value to our emerging company community which I can’t wait to get out live.

Your 2018 priority

Drink more water and make use of my standing desk!

Your New Year's resolution

What changes have you seen in the Nifty customer group this past year?

Traditionally the Nifty Grants customer base is skewed fairly heavily towards early stage IT and technology companies so it’s been interesting to see a trend this year towards some different industries. One trend we’ve noticed is a spike in claimants in the food and beverage industry with exciting innovations for people choosing to eat more vegan/gluten free products.

What kind of R&D activity (or industry) do you predict will grow (or peak) in 2018?

Maybe this is just because it’s topical right now, but I’d expect to see a spike in product development focussed on blockchain and cryptocurrency. With technology such as Bitcoin gaining widespread momentum there will be a need to strengthen the technology and infrastructure that enables it. It would be great to see some Australian businesses be at the forefront.

Your 2018 priority

2018 is going to be an exciting year at Nifty - We’re going to see a number of new services becoming available through the platform. I like to liken each new service we being on as a cash flow boost or value add for our customers, so it will be great to see a few things we’ve had in the pipeline come to life.

What's been your highlight of 2017?

My passions are innovation, technology and helping grow the Australian startup ecosystem through providing support to startups through their lifecycle from ideation to growth from a product, understanding their market & customer and tax consulting perspective so joining the Nifty Grants team in 2017 after more than four years in the accounting and tax advisory practice was my personal highlight as I'm now able to work with startups daily and help them with one of the most important aspect which is funding!

What are you most excited about in 2018 from a technology & startups perspective?

I'm super excited to see the Australian startup community continue to grow in 2018; bigger and better events, support from government and positive collaboration between all parties in the ecosystem - startups, corporates, government, incubators, accelerators, investors, co-working spaces and universities.

The adoption and continued growth of emerging technologies such as blockchain, AI, machine learning, AR and VR in the new year is also one to keep an eye on as we will see more and more exciting projects being built that are solving genuine, real world problems.

Your New Year's resolution

My New Year's resolution is to simply eat well, exercise well, family & friends well, travel well and live life well!

Jeremy Worthington, Grants and Incentives Specialist

What is your highlight of of 2017?

Having just joined the Nifty team after five years in a more traditional R&D advisory practice, my highlight has been getting to know the Nifty Client portfolio and some of the great projects that are being carried out in the SME and startup community.

Your predictions for tech in 2018?

Increased regulator scrutiny means that we are seeing more emphasis on record keeping and substantiation and I expect that my focus for 2018 will be to help small companies build the data sets that they’ll need to support their R&D claims. This includes the types of data that are required, the best ways to record it without spending all day making documents, and where to keep it all so that an audit is not a fearful prospect.

Your New Year's resolution

My New Year's resolution is to improve my personal fitness. Physical agility assists mental agility and I want to be the best I can be.

Your highlight of 2017?

The launch of new Nifty - which was a much larger achievement than many of our customers know!

Our team not only built a ‘new Nifty’ site, that you now know, but an entirely new platform. This is now making waves internally at PwC and externally. If you business collects customer or stakeholder information via a form, which requires processing and providing an output, get in touch as we may have a solution for you. (A second close comes our recent team volleyball tournament!)

What are you looking forward to in 2018?

I’m really excited to be leading Nifty’s community projects, which include collaborations with some other great Australian startups/SMEs.

Collectively, we recognise that education is a key that opens many doors - and can be a real contributor to the success of a new and growing business. It’s our way of giving some value to Australian ecosystem, which we can do so easily with our team’s great expertise.
